iDisrupted

Airbus Group’s annual financial results of 2014 will be announced on February 27th. Is disruptive technology about to change the balance sheet for the airline business for ever?

iDisrupted co-author John Straw explains that tactical and strategic disruption will become the norm in this industry and here he provides commentary on why.

Reduction in passengers caused by economic disruption of white collar workers.

With the rise in artificial intelligence and deep learning Mckinsey is apparently predicting 40+million white collar job losses by 2025. One could expect cataclysmic disruption and massive unemployment. Losses from business travel and personal travel will result in two things; reduced travel and less aircrafts.

Disruption Index, Negative, 10/10. Disruption Horizon, Long Term

Virtual reality and free video conferencing.

With increases in virtual reality technology and free video conferencing, business travel for meetings will be questioned. Why travel for a meeting when teams can all be in a meeting room virtually?

Disruption Index, Negative, 8/10. Disruption Horizon, Medium Term

3d Printed aircraft parts.

Printing aircraft parts with a 3d printer is already happening. Using this technique will have massive implications for the build of aircrafts. Quite simply, it has the opportunity to reduce aircraft build and operational costs substantially.

Disruption Index, Positive, 3/10. Disruption Horizon, Short Term

Reshoring of manufacturing with 3d printing.

3d printing reduces manufacturing costs substantially but it also has the ability to take personalisation of product to the ultimate level. Inshoring manufacturing will reduce the need for export from mainstream manufacturing nationals like China.

Disruption Index, Negative, 6/10. Disruption Horizon, Long Term

Electric airplanes

Battery powered airplanes - this will become a reality.

Disruption Index, Positive, 9/10. Disruption Horizon, Long Term
