As Albert Schweitzer said, “There are two means of refuge from the misery of life: music and cats”

Portsmouth musicians spearhead effort to bring clothing, medicine and musical instruments to an orphanage in Cherkasy, Ukraine as part of a paying it forward program sponsored by D’Addario and Octopus Ukulele. A documentary will be filmed with the support of film students to capture the endeavor, and the resulting concert.

Portsmouth, UK – March 3, 2015 — Seeking a way to give back to those less fortunate by giving the gift of music and much needed clothing and supplies, Quinn Boylan founded this unique program he is calling ‘Ukuleles for Ukraine’. Having played in bands growing up and knowing the positive impact that learning an instrument has played in his life, Quinn wanted to create a similar opportunity for the orphans in this volatile part of the world. He will be joined by UK-based music activist and professional music teacher Mark Griffiths, along with film students to teach the 100 children ukulele; documenting their musical learning process while showcasing their situation in Ukraine.

Ukuleles for Ukraine has already received press attention and has gained sponsors for the effort. Octopus Ukulele will provide 20 ukuleles free of charge and 20 ukuleles at a highly discounted rate for the children to enjoy. D’Addario, one of the largest musical string manufacturers in the world, will provide ukulele strings and tuners. “We at Octopus instruments are delighted to have teamed up with Quinn Boylan and Mark Griffiths in support of Ukuleles for Ukraine project. The ukulele is surely the happiest instrument on the planet, and we are so pleased to be able to help bring some of this happiness to those who need it most thanks to the tireless efforts of Quinn and Mark.” Said Tom Groves, Sales Manager of Octopus Ukulele.

“Mark and I wanted to find a way to share our skills with these children, hopefully enriching their lives with music along with tangible items like clothing, and medicine. As Albert Schweitzer said, “There are two means of refuge from the misery of life: music and cats”. We will provide them with basic, beginner level instruction on easy-to-play ukulele, teach them songs, then bring them together in a concert performance at their talent show during the end of our stay. Hopefully the love of music sticks with a few of them and their confidence & creativity will increase. We’re grateful for the support of D’Addario and Octopus to help make a difference in the lives of these children.” Said Quinn Boylan, founder of Ukuleles for Ukraine.

Elaine Smith, Marketing Manager at D’Addario, was equally enthused about their efforts. “We are very excited to be involved with Ukuleles for Ukraine. We are aware that these children are enthusiastic by receiving even simple items like secondhand clothing, and we very much look forward to seeing them enjoy their first music lessons.”
