Shop Planograms Can Help With Upcoming Tobacco Display Ban, Retail Smart Advises Monday 9 March 2015 PDF Print Starting from the 6th of April, independent retailers will be unable to display tobacco products, in accordance with the Tobacco Display Ban of 2012. Leading providers of planogram software, Retail Smart, have commented on the recent news regarding the tobacco display ban. Independent retailers can use 3D modelling to decide how to best allocate space. Starting from the 6th of April, independent retailers will be unable to display tobacco products, in accordance with the Tobacco Display Ban of 2012. This ban is already in place for larger stores in the UK – any premises of more than 280 sq metres (3000 sq feet). As of the 6th of April, all shops in the UK will have to store their tobacco products out of sight of the customers; in smaller independent shops where space is a premium, this can present a real problem. Some retailers have already opted to stop displaying tobacco products, such as Sheffield retailer Jai Singh who is using the downtime until the ban is implemented to train his staff in the legislation. Singh made full use of his previous planogram in order to ensure that his staff knew where the products would now be kept before the display was covered up. “It hasn’t affected our sales in any way,” Singh told Independent Retail News. The only customers who were disadvantaged by the early adoption of the ban were customers scanning for prices and looking for the cheapest deals. Singh went on to explain that he is in the process of getting council permission to extend his store and looking into the possibility of moving his tobacco products to an overhead gantry. A spokesperson for Retail Smart has commented on Singh’s plans. “The use of a planogram here was really smart. Not only does it help orient staff, but it’ll help map out how (he) will refurbish once the extension is complete. The planogram would also let him try out different merchandising options for the space where the tobacco products were before. He could, for example, design a space for merchandising his spirits and liquors – and if he decides he doesn’t like it, he won’t have the cost of dismantling a physical display.” Retail Smart is a UK planogram and store planning software and services company.
