The Embassy Tea Gallery is pleased to present Expedition, a solo exhibition of recent works by Gordon Davidson that brings together the results of years of experimentation in use of pigments and materials with immersion in viewing the natural world in new ways, both at the macro and micro levels.

In his vivacious mixed-media work, Gordon Davidson creates fields of texture that are deep enough for the eye and mind to get lost in. Davidson paints broad, assertive patterns, many on aluminium. His colours are bright and sometimes confrontational, and his brushstrokes are confidently gestural. He chooses a single pattern for each composition and amplifies it, stripping that pattern of context and making it seem as if it has no beginning and no end, only reverberations. The motif echoes off the surface filling even the space that surrounds the work.

Many of Gordon’s Aluminium Paintings are based on his travels throughout Morocco. These works exploit light and the inherent reflectivity of the material to bring an entirely new dimension, changing the nature of his images in different lights at different times of the day, as well as enhancing the richness of colours and form.

Gordon’s Earth Portraits have evolved from examining the behaviour of different types of pigments in combination with different base materials to create new, 3 dimensional ‘colour topographies’ that invite the viewer to go on their own ‘expedition’ into unexplored terrain reminiscent of satellite images of the Earth. This is further explored within a series of 3-D reliefs using a variety of materials that explores the boundaries between painting and sculpture.

Exhibited works and others can also be viewed and purchased at:

Davidson was born in Inverness, Scotland and currently maintains studios in both Edinburgh and Marrakech. He sells his work through his own company, Gordon Davidson Modern Art and regularly exhibits in London, Morocco and New York.

Gordon is represented internationally, by the Agora Gallery in New York and in Los Angeles. He also works with leading UK art consultant Katherine Maginnis and international design houses to provide large scale works for prestigious residential developments. His works have sold to both private and corporate clients.
Among Davidson's chief influences were his studies in industrial design, which introduced him to the concept of combining the space of business with the psychology of art. This aesthetic is the thrilling point where much of Davidson's creativity lies. His large-scale corporate pieces balance pattern and colour to both incorporate and temper the particular elements of the environment that they inhabit.
