CCTV Vital in Highlighting Hapless Man’s Failed Theft, says AlertSystems Monday 16 March 2015 PDF Print When found lying next to the car, passers-by assumed he had been a victim of a hit and run The reaction comes following a report in the Daily Mail detailing an incident where a man tried to break into a car parked outside a pub in order to steal it, only for the brick he used to try and break the window to rebound and hit him on the head, leaving him knocked out at the scene. The man was trying to break into a brand new Mercedes Coupe parked outside of the Pheasant’s Bar in Drogheda, Ireland. When found lying next to the car, passers-by assumed he had been a victim of a hit and run – something that the man later confirmed as he was roused by the concerned members of the public. When he said he didn't want to press any charges, staff looked at their CCTV cameras to get to the bottom of the incident and saw the footage of the attempted theft. The dents in the side of the Mercedes acted as further pieces of compounding evidence and police were able to carry out a criminal investigation and trial, the results of which are yet to be confirmed. A spokesperson for AlertSystems, market leaders in successful security implementation, has released a statement following the report. “An incident such as the one we have seen here in Drogheda is a prime example of why exterior CCTV cameras are so important, especially for pubs and bars. “Of course, the circumstances that the thief was found are somewhat comical but we mustn’t let this distract from the overall issue. Thanks to carefully placed security cameras, the man was not able to get away with his act of criminal damage and attempted theft – without them, there is every chance he would have managed to convince the people that found him that he was a victim. “We urge any business that is still without sufficient security protecting their premises to contact us immediately. While the outcome was a successful one here in Ireland, it could have been a completely different one altogether without CCTV.” AlertSystems manage and maintain thousands of commercial security installations throughout the UK and are specialists in providing business security solutions.
