The SHMA’s report recommends that 950 new homes should be built every year for almost two decades

A new report from the Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) has revealed that almost 1,000 new houses should built in East Devon every year for the next 18 years, according to projected job growth in the area over the next two decades.

The report comes after Exeter, East Devon, Mid Devon, Teignbridge, and the Dartmoor National Park commissioned the independent SHMA to decide if the council’s original figures for projected housing numbers were appropriate. The SHMA’s report recommends that 950 new homes should be built every year for almost two decades – 200 more houses per year than the council’s original figure. The figures are based on the projected job growth for East Devon at an average of 549 new jobs per year.

Despite the increase, council leader Paul Diviani feels that the new figure is still in line with the original plan, though he pledged to defend East Devon from “inappropriate development” should the projections fall short. He commented on the report, saying “Although I recognise that the new homes figure of 950 dwellings is higher than our original projection of 750 homes – which we had felt was appropriate for our future needs – the increase is in fact relatively modest… We must follow the evidence provided [by the SHMA] and make growth in new homes work for our communities.”

Light Mirrors, a company local to the Devon area, takes particular interest in reports such as this. A spokesperson for the company commented on the report, saying: “We’re pleased to hear the proposals are moving forward. Affordable new housing is a topic which we hear a lot these days, and it’ll be good for the local community to see steady growth and expansion over the next two decades.”

“Devon isn’t all just beautiful beaches and tourist attractions though – any potential tenants looking to move to Devon will want to see how modern and contemporary the area is. This new housing is perfectly set to frame how modern and contemporary life in Devon is. Savvy property developers will be looking to install luxury bathrooms and luxury items such as illuminated mirrors into these new houses in order to increase the asking price.”
