The most iconic sporting trophy, the 2018 FIFA World Cup Winners Trophy, is coming to Northern Ireland.

The World Governing Body of Football, FIFA, has granted the extraordinary honour to Northern Ireland to allow the Trophy to be present at the Gala Premiere of the film ‘Shooting for Socrates’.

The honour is being made in recognition of Northern Ireland’s Jim Boyce OBE, FIFA’s current Vice President who will conclude his term in office in June this year and who will be guest of honour at the film premiere.

The film launches at the Waterfront Hall during the Belfast Film Festival on the 24th of April 2015.

The visit by the Trophy has been instigated by former Northern Ireland International Footballer, David Campbell, whose astonishing journey to make his international debut against Brazil in the FIFA World Cup Finals in 1986 is the subject of the new film.

Speaking about the 1986 World Cup Finals, David says: "The World Cup Campaign had an amazing impact on Northern Ireland and I was so lucky to have been a part of it, especially as we were the smallest nation at that time to qualify."

He continues; "Jim Boyce is much admired in World Football and to have been granted the honour of Jim and the FIFA World Cup Winners Trophy being present at the Gala Premier of this movie is amazing."

FIFA President Blatter gave his personal authority to allow the appearance of the Trophy.

Also present at the Premiere will be FIFA Director of Communications & Public Affairs, Walter De Gregorio and most of the original Northern Ireland 1986 squad including Captain Sammy McIlroy and Pat Jennings.

David Campbell was the inspiration for the film, written by award winning writer Marie Jones, following a chance meeting with Film Director James Erskine at the Cannes Film Festival. After his career was cut short by injury soon after his World Cup campaign, David has dedicated his life to creating opportunities in football for others and now operates multi-award-winning education programmes in England and Northern Ireland.

In conclusion, David says: “Football creates an amazing opportunity to educate, inspire and thrill. The FIFA World Cup Winners Trophy is the ultimate prize in football and at long last we can say it’s coming to Northern Ireland.”
