English National Opera to Protect Full-Time Musicians Monday 18 May 2015 PDF Print Artistic director John Berry highlighted the importance of members of ENO’s orchestra The head of the English National Opera (ENO) has publicly backed the protection of their full-time musicians despite the fact that Arts Council England said positions may be in danger to save money. Fusion Bags have responded to the report in the Independent. Artistic director John Berry highlighted the importance of members of ENO’s orchestra and the singers for the company’s future. They will perform Tristan and Isolde in the near future along with new productions of La bohème and Philip Glass’s Akhnaten. Mr Berry said: “We’ve made it clear from the beginning that this company isn’t the ENO without the full-time orchestra and chorus. Only an opera orchestra can deliver that range of repertoire every night. This is about quality and keeping the quality.” Uncertain times for the company were expected after the Arts Council dropped it as a national portfolio organisation in February due to differences in opinion with their business plans. This included the cost of their musicians on full-time contracts. The ENO has received critical acclaim despite their financial issues and were awarded for their creativity after winning two Olivier awards in the past year. A spokesperson for Fusion Bags, suppliers of equipment for commuting musicians, commented on the news regarding the ENO’s orchestra. They said: “It must be reassuring for the English National Opera’s musicians to hear that their jobs are secure for the near future after unsettling speculation regarding their employment due to financial problems. Most businesses have had to cut costs and make tough decisions, but it appears as though their jobs are secure. “They are rewarding talented musicians and this is what we do at Fusion Bags. We realise how difficult transporting equipment from gig to gig can be for commuting musicians and so provide comfortable bags that protect expensive musical instruments.
