Hotel Development at Risk from Japanese Knotweed, SES Responds Thursday 21 May 2015 PDF Print Japanese knotweed grows incredibly quickly, and if left untended can take over buildings and roads. The response follows reports in Ilfracombe of a hotel development being under threat after the discovery of Japanese knotweed. A Southern Ecological Solutions (SES) spokesperson issues a statement. The development of a derelict hotel on Ilfracombe seafront is under threat following the discovery of Japanese knotweed. The grade two listed Berkeley Hotel was scheduled to be converted into eight two-bedroom apartments this year following the approval of building plans, but the invasive species has put those plans under threat. Japanese knotweed grows incredibly quickly, and if left untended can take over buildings and roads. The redevelopment has now been halted pending further investigation, while councillor Rod Donovan said the issue could take up to four years to resolve. The hotel’s future is to be discussed during upcoming council meetings. Southern Ecological Solutions, a leading provider of ecological consultancy, takes a keen interest in reports such as this. A spokesperson provided this statement: “The discovery of invasive species such as Japanese knotweed will be hugely detrimental to the redevelopment of this hotel, and a lot of work will have to be done to ensure the plans can be resumed. “Japanese knotweed can grow metres every month, so it’s essential that the right methods are in place to identify and control it. At Southern Ecological Solutions we have an experienced team who are adept at identifying this invasive plant, which is crucial at the pre-purchase stage if possible. If Japanese knotweed is identified once a site has been purchased SES are experienced with using various site specific techniques to control the problem. SES have solutions to minimise your exposure to the risks associated with invasive plants, either when you’re considering site purchase or if site is already owned and affected by invasive species.” Southern Ecological Solutions (SES) is a multidisciplinary independent business that provides ecological and arboricultural consulting services throughout the UK.
