One of the two stolen rings was a silver band with a single amethyst; the other was an 18 carat yellow gold engagement ring with a large brown diamond setting. The engagement ring also features a number of smaller white diamonds. While a man has been charged in connection to the crime, the rings have are yet to be recovered. A picture of the engagement ring, which is of great sentimental value to the woman, has been released by the police. The police are asking people to be vigilant, alerting them if they see the ring. Sgt Gill Beecroft of the Northumbria Police has commented on the situation, saying “This really is an awful crime and the victim has lost a hugely sentimental possession. The victim is elderly and this burglary has greatly affected her… The recovery of this ring would bring her much comfort. The ring may have been sold in the Newcastle or Middlesbrough area and I would urge anyone who may have seen this ring or been offered the ring for sale to contact police.” Marlow’s Diamonds, a UK supplier of ethically sourced diamond jewellery, takes a keen interest in stories such as this. A spokesperson for the company commented, saying: “An engagement ring is a powerful, symbolic thing which holds a lot of value, both in a monetary sense and in terms of sentimental value. This crime has left an elderly woman without one of her most valued possessions, and all the police have to go on is a low resolution photograph of the ring. “Unfortunately diamonds will always be considered high value targets for thieves, and steps need to be taken to ensure that your diamond can come back to you in the future should it be stolen. If you’re looking to buy any diamond jewellery make sure you have your stones independently certified by the likes of IGI or GIA before you buy.” Marlow’s Diamonds are one of the UK’s leading certified diamond specialists and they take great pride in sourcing all diamonds with extreme care and due diligence.
