Growth in Accountancy Profession Highlight’s Industry’s Progression, says Braant Wednesday 27 May 2015 PDF Print Following the recession, it is clear that accountancy has benefited as people begin to rebuild and recover. The reaction comes following a report in Economia detailing the sharp rise in the number of new accountancy firms throughout the United Kingdom, a rate that has outpaced the legal profession by almost five times. According to the report’s analysis, as of the beginning of the 2015-16 financial year there are 44,025 accountancy firms in the country. This time last year, there were only 41,455 – a huge 6.2 per cent increase in just twelve months – and in 2008 there were just 31,115, signalling a growth of around 15.5 per cent in seven years. When put into context, the legal profession has seen just a 1.3 per cent increase over the past year. The business sector in general has grown by 5.3 per cent since 2008, something that does much to highlight the accelerated pace that accountancy as a whole is experiencing. Following the recession, it is clear that accountancy has benefited as people begin to rebuild and recover. The report states that "while it is true that in bad times you still need an accountant, the profession clearly benefits from an uptick in economic activity. Accountants were focused on cost-cutting and reducing headcounts during the recession, but the emphasis is shifting so that accountants with strong resource planning and change management skills are increasingly in demand as businesses grow.” A spokesperson for Braant, a leading accountancy firm in the UK, has released a statement following the report. “It is extremely encouraging to be a part of such a resurgence of the accountancy industry, and even better to know that the public now has access to a considerable number of firms perfectly suited to deal with their finances. “However, as the market becomes more competitive, it is up to firms such as ourselves here at Braant to prove our quality and set ourselves apart from the rest.
