Omnifone steps in to acquire rare Sivyer record collection containing every chart single since inception Friday 29 May 2015 PDF Print UK-based global digital music cloud platform provider ensures rare vinyl collection remains in the UK London – 29 May 2015 - Omnifone® confirmed today that it has purchased a stunning record collection containing every single in the top forty since inception. The extraordinary collection spanning six decades of chart music was the lifetime’s work of collector Keith Sivyer. From 1954 until his death earlier this year, Keith visited his local record shop every week, and eventually amassed over 45,000 records at an estimated cost of over £250,000. The collection is believed to be one of the most complete and unique in private hands in the country. “We were struck dumb when we first visited Keith’s house.” said Andrew Ewbank, Partner of Ewbank’s auctioneers, “It was an honour to have been instructed to find a home for this fabulous collection”. Following substantial media coverage, competition for ownership of the collection was tough. At auction last Thursday, the bidding room was full and there were ten telephone bidders from across the world, including Brazil and Canada. Omnifone’s successful bid has ensured the collection remains together and in the UK. “We were concerned that the collection would be purchased by a dealer who would split it up” continued Ewbank, “but we were delighted when Omnifone purchased all four lots. It very nearly ended up going to a collector in Australia.” Gerald Sivyer, Keith’s brother commented, “I’m thrilled that Omnifone has been able to keep my brother’s extraordinary record collection together and is planning to host it in West London near our family home; it’s what Keith would have wanted.” Robert Ashcroft, CEO, PRS for Music commented, “The Sivyer collection is a rare and historically important musical treasure charting the diversity of the UK’s most loved songs. Among these valuable sound recordings are thousands of works by PRS for Music songwriters and composers whom we are proud to represent. PRS for Music, on behalf of its 111,000 members, are delighted that Omnifone has acquired all the lots and kept this essential collection together and in the UK.” Omnifone is to re-establish the Sivyer record collection in its offices in West London. “Day to day we work with 44 million digital tracks from 200 countries, now we have one of the world’s finest and culturally significant physical collections” said Phil Sant, Chief Engineer and Co-Founder. Omnifone is a company steeped in musical history, and is committed to preserving British musical heritage. Omnifone intends to establish an experiential exhibition to bring the collection back to life and to continue this extraordinary collector’s legacy. Geoffrey Marsh, Director of Theatre and Performance, V&A said “The huge success of the David Bowie exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 2013 shows how museums are starting to create fully immersive exhibitions where records are no longer just used as background sound but are being presented as exhibits in themselves. Omnifone’s upcoming experiential exhibition will be an exciting addition to this new wave of culturally significant records being put on display.” Omnifone is in talks with the Victoria & Albert Museum and The British Library in London about the indexing, digitisation and loaning of the collection.
