Driving Licence Changes Catching Out British Tourists Wednesday 3 June 2015 PDF Print The DVLA have decided to stop holding driver’s details on a sheet of paper Britons arriving at their holiday destination are finding it difficult to hire a vehicle following changes by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). A spokesperson for Drive Car Hire, who rent out vehicles in England, has released a statement regarding the confusion for holidaymakers. The DVLA have decided to stop holding driver’s details on a sheet of paper, with information such as traffic offences being made available to view online on their database or by phone or post. This change will be implemented on June 8 meaning that holidaymakers travelling overseas will have to log in on the DVLA website the day before they start their trip abroad. They will get a special code to show their drive car hire company when arriving to rent a vehicle. There are fears this will lead to confusion due to a lack of public awareness about the change. At least this is the view of Mark Bower, managing director of the car hire insurance website MoneyMaxim. He said: “Most people are simply unaware that these changes are on the way – and it is not just renters. I spoke to one big car hire firm in Portugal this week and they knew nothing of the changes. Six weeks away from implementation, the whole thing is very muddled.” The passcode is only valid for 72 hours, so anyone choosing to hire a car in the second week of their trip will have to find a way of logging in online to get another code. A spokesperson for Drive Car Hire commented on the potential confusion. They said: “Drivers will need to acknowledge this change in approach to hiring vehicles abroad which is popular for those looking to explore a particular region. Unfortunately, many who have already booked their holiday may presume the old method of renting a car will work.” Drive Car Hire is a London-based car hire company, offering over 1500 self-drive hire vehicles nationwide. With 20 years of experience between their specialist team members, they pride themselves on their customer service and ability to provide the vehicle you need. They have access to everything from articulated lorries and black taxis to 50cc mopeds and dual control cars for driving tests.
