a Derby pub-goer, handed himself in after footage was published of him touching a paramedic

The power of CCTV footage and public appeals was recently proved after Anthony Francini, a Derby pub-goer, handed himself in after footage was published of him touching a paramedic inappropriately. Mr Francini stoked the woman’s back and squeezed her bum as she reached for equipment from her bag. She had been treating an elderly man who had collapsed on the stairs of the Standing Order pub.

Francini pleaded guilty to common assault and was given a 12-month conditional discharge and told to pay £1,000 in costs. Judge Michael Fowler stated: “There are two principal aspects to your behaviour that have been wholly reprehensible. It offends because it’s sexually offensive to women to treat them that way. Paramedics helping individuals ought to be able to do so without people like you interfering and assaulting them.”

A spokesperson from East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) stated: “This was a completely unacceptable assault which caused a great deal of stress and upset our staff. They were dealing with an elderly patient who had collapsed and were busy ensuring the best possible care for that patient when Mr Francini committed the crime. He clearly had no respect for our staff or the patient. We are pleased with the sentence and hope it acts as a deterrent to others.”
