• Overall vacancies climb 4% month-on-month
• NHS snaps up IT staff to implement new digital projects
• Public sector digital demand also on the rise
• Hourly rates climb to £17 per hour

Job vacancies in the East of England increase by 4%
The May 2015 East of England Recruitment Index recorded a 4% month-on-month increase in job availability with 2,912 vacancies advertised, compared to 2,800 in April 2015.

Avtar Singh, Associate Director of Venn Group, commented:

“The increase in hiring activity in the East was visible in a number of sectors, particularly within digital. The region has built a reputation as a pioneer in the Internet of Things and a home to highly skilled digital communities, and so demand for these particular professionals soars. This, in turn, means that organisations must be willing to pay the top rates in order to secure the top regional talent. For example, the average rate for departmental heads of project management reached £700 per day, almost four times the typical contractor day rate in the region.

“The Index also revealed that the NHS contributed significantly to the boom in hiring activity within the digital sector. IT contractors were being snapped up around the region to upgrade systems and infrastructures that have been rolled out across a large proportion of trusts, such as the digitalisation of patient records. “

Contractors gain in remuneration stakes as a result of increased demand

The average rate for those securing jobs in May 2015 has risen since last month’s Index, with contractors now receiving an average of £17 per hour across the region.
Avtar Singh continued:

“This activity looks set to continue. We predict that recent government findings concerning NHS spending on interim clinical staff will send medical recruitment through the roof in the coming months as trusts work to resolve systematic problems. It is likely that strategic hiring professionals will also be brought in to look at where additional staff can be sourced from. On top of this, we expect to see demand for workforce analysts rise sharply as organisations look to find out exactly where spending is and what issues there are with the current workforce, for example, high turnover in particular areas, high sickness rates etc. With this in mind, we predict that the East’s employment market will be just as busy in this quarter as in the last.”
