Fontsmith launches truly hand-drawn typeface FS Shepton Thursday 23 July 2015 PDF Print Fontsmith releases new hand-crafted typeface, FS Shepton Fontsmith announces the release of FS Shepton, a brand new truly hand-drawn typeface developed specifically for use as a display font in packaging, point-of-sale and advertising. Most ‘handwritten’ typefaces are created entirely digitally. Not FS Shepton. From the start, the intention was to create something that was 100% hand-drawn and purposely imperfect, with the kind of inconsistent, organic shapes and textures of signs in a delicatessen or greengrocers. FS Shepton is the first release by Fontsmith designer Andy Lethbridge whom Jason spotted after seeing his exquisite hand lettering on Instagram and later his degree show. After experimenting with a range of media, Andy developed three alphabets of similar character but very different texture and style. FS Shepton Regular, drawn with a wet brush pen, is solid with a rough outer edge and a casual but controlled feel. The dry brush used to create FS Shepton Light gives it more inner texture and a more formal, slanted, calligraphic style. FS Shepton Bold, drawn using a wider, looser dry brush pen, has a woody grain in the middle of its broad strokes and greater solidity where the brush moves more slowly. In contrast, the letterforms of conventional script fonts are simply fattened digitally to generate heavier weights. The three weights of FS Shepton have been created as display fonts that all offer something different to labelling, packaging, point-of-sale and advertising. Lovingly crafted by hand, they’re a good match for products and settings that share the same artisinal qualities: organic foods, drinks and healthcare products, as well as premium chocolate, coffee and condiments.
