Its amazing to be bringing the excitement and speed of track racing right to the heart of central London

The ASDA StreetVelodrome Series SuperFinals – Broadgate, City of London

The World’s most accessible cycle sport, the ASDA StreetVelodrome Series, will conclude its nationwide televised tour in the heart of the City of London starting on Wednesday 12th August and concluding on Thursday 13th August.

The series uniquely uses an innovative pop-up velodrome to create a theatre of Olympic style pursuit racing right in the heart of the city. Adding to drama local amateur riders get the chance to qualify to take part in the series which also sees the likes of Olympian and Commonwealth games gold medallist Craig Maclean MBE taking part as professional riders.

All the action from the ASDA StreetVelodrome tour is being filmed for a new four part series to be shown on BTSport in the autumn.

The SuperFinals will be the climax to the series which has been explosive since the tour began in Paisley, Scotland back in May. In total six regional events have been held across the country with hundreds of local amateurs competing for the right to appear at the SuperFinals and to battle it out to be crowned the top amateur cyclists of the year. It really is like Britian's Got 'Cycling' Talent.

In Broadgate it will be about personal glory as well as scoring well for the team. Each of the pro riders, and their erstwhile amateur team mates, will compete to score gold, silver and bronze medals which count towards their team’s position in the overall Olympic style medal table. But adding to the excitement and drama of the occasion, on SuperFinals night, each individual rider is also out to win Championship titles of their own.

Anna Glowinski, pro rider for Team Quella and star of ITV4’s The Cycle Show is the defending female champion. She comments “Its amazing to be bringing the excitement and speed of track racing right to the heart of central London. Last year the crowds really got behind the riders, the support really pushes you to go just that little bit faster. It should be an awesome event.”

Also racing will be Italian BMX champion Mario Presi, British Downhill Champion Jess Stone, Team GB cyclo-cross rider Jack Ravenscroft and Defending male pro rider champion Dave Johnson.

Carl Thompson, Series Director for the ASDA StreetVelodrome comments “Broadgate, City of London is our ‘Wembley’, its where all the other rounds of the series lead to and the one race which every single rider, pro or amateur really wants to win. With this year’s event being held over two days it also gives lots of local amateur riders and families an increased chance to get on track and experience our professional coaching for themselves. Its all completely free and very enjoyable”.

Free ‘Come & Try It’ sessions will run during Wednesday 12th August and again on Thursday 13th August. The main feature racing will start at 6pm on Thursday. Entry to spectators and participants is completely free.
