Overall numbers of job vacancies fall, with an 11% decrease in July

The July 2015 Leeds Recruitment Index recorded an 11% month-on-month decrease in job availability with 3,520 vacancies advertised, compared to 3,955 in June 2015.

Stan Murray Hession, Director of Venn Group, commented:

“Leeds has witnessed a slight dip in hiring activity throughout July, which is typical of the summer months leading up to September. However, there have been other areas which have slowed down independently of this trend, particularly within the NHS which faced delays as new projects reached the approval stages. However, there has been an increase of roles within procurement departments as trusts reviewed their hiring processes to streamline their staffing and reduce expenditure on interim staff.”

Contractors’ rates climb despite dip in vacancy levels

The average rate for those securing jobs in July 2015 has risen, with contractors now receiving an average of £358 per day across the region.

“Leeds’ tech sector has continued to thrive despite this dip, with sources suggesting it has grown by 3% in the last three months. One nearby start-up, Omlis, a mobile payments security business, is set to treble its size before the end of the year. It secured over £20m in contracts across Europe, South America, the Middle East and Africa over the next five years. This is just one example of the success stories within the region, reflected by a huge rise in demand for IT professionals – particularly project managers who are commanding average rates of £390 per day, well above the typical regional rate of £360 per day. It is likely that the IT and tech sectors will help to drive Leeds forward, and we should see vacancy levels in all sectors rise as September approaches.”
