Teachers opting for flexibility over permanent roles Monday 24 August 2015 PDF Print Growing numbers of supply teachers would turn down the opportunity to work on a permanent basis if offered a contract position, according to the latest survey data from giant group. The specialist services provider’s analysis of its contractor database found that the number of supply teachers who would reject a permanent role has grown for the third year in a row. In the same period the number of those who would accept a permanent position has fallen, highlighting how contracting is becoming an increasingly attractive option for teachers. Matthew Brown, managing director of giant group, comments: “The results are encouraging, but not wholly surprising as the data ties in with the wider trend that shows more people are choosing to operate as contractors across a range of sectors. And while supply teaching might not be the most obvious field for contractors, the benefits are clear to see. These individuals will get to experience a considerably wider range of schools and teach far more pupils than their permanent counterparts which can only help their skills’ development.” “The growth of supply teaching also fits in with the growing need for flexible working in the modern world. It’s highly likely that many professionals benefit from the increased ability that they have to balance their working and personal lives. This is the third year in a row that we’ve seen an increase in the number of supply teachers rejecting the chance to work permanently and we only expect this to increase further in the future.” Note to editors Since 1992, giant has developed and delivered groundbreaking workforce management solutions to the recruitment market: • award-winning giant umbrella is the professional umbrella employer of choice for temporary workers, freelancers and contractors.
