Don’t get spooked by poor currency rates this half term holiday as Summer’s Euro high falters in the Fall ICE offers tips on travel money for families heading to the Eurozone

After the Euro Bonanza this summer when holidaymakers stockpiled Euros as exchange rates reached a 7 year high, the Pound to Euro rate has slumped in recent weeks, perhaps leaving those planning an Autumn or Half-Term break with the nagging feeling that they may have missed the boat. The average transaction value for Euros from ICE – International Currency Exchange was £1083.43 this summer – the highest level in the last three years and loads to the ICE Travellers Cashcard, a prepaid currency card in Euros, also jumped as savvy travellers locked in the rate while the going was good. The amount of money loaded to cards increased by 20% in July compared to June with the average amount loaded £421*.

Even though the Pound has weakened against the Euro, holidaymakers are still getting around 80 more Euros this October compared to last on a £1000 exchange (October 2015 £1=1.32 Euros vs October 2014 £1= 1.24 Euros).

Koko Sarkari, COO for ICE said: “We need to remember that only a couple of years ago the Euro rate was 1.15 to the Pound so today’s rate of around 1.32 is still favourable in comparison. However, a bit of planning both in terms of ordering travel money and methods of payment overseas can help make budgets go that bit further. Online rates tend to be more competitive than the high street but shop around and compare. Remember to factor in postage costs if you are having money delivered to home.

“Some travel money providers offer special Click & Collect deals from their branches, so it is worth checking these out too.

“Also consider loading Euros to a prepaid currency card such as the ICE Travellers Cashcard. This can help protect travellers from further rate falls as the rate is effectively locked into the card once the money is loaded.

“Getting a good deal on currency should be a top priority for travellers wherever they go and by combining a number of options from pre-ordered travel money cash, loading currency onto prepaid cards, or using a credit card that’s free of overseas charges, travellers can take advantage of convenient payment options and competitive rates of exchange.”

As an additional incentive to use the ICE Travellers Cashcard, or make the most of ICE’s competitive exchange rates online or on the high street, ICE has teamed up with CityJet to offer 50 free flights to Europe. Travellers simply need to top up £500 or more on to a new or existing ICE Travellers Cashcard or order £1000 or over of Travel Money to be in with a chance to win one of 50 return flights all routes serviced between October 2015 and March 2016.
