Wednesday 18 November 2015 PDF Print Silversurfers.com survey reveals main health concerns of the over 50s Top concerns: • 34% worry about losing brain capacity • 23% worry about aching joints London 18 November 2015, Silversurfers.com, the over 50s online community, has conducted a survey of over 1,660 respondents, to investigate the main health concerns of the over 50s. Martin Lock, CEO Silversurfers.com, said: “Our survey results reveal that people are less worried about poor vision and hearing (6% and 2% respectively) and that their main worries relate to Alzheimers, Dementia and Rheumatism (joint pain). We urge the Government to take on board these results and begin an education campaign to help people minimize their risk of suffering from these ailments.” Martin Lock continues, “Could ballroom dancing be the answer? The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City has found that dancing could stimulate the mind and ‘make us smarter’.” The study states: “the only physical activity to offer protection against dementia was frequent dancing. Activities studied showed: • Reading – 35% reduced risk of dementia • Cycling and swimming – 0% • Doing crossword puzzles at least four days a week – 47% ** • Playing golf – 0% • Dancing frequently – 76%. That was the greatest risk reduction of any activity studied, cognitive or physical.” Martin Lock concludes: “With a growing elderly population, and a shrinking welfare budget, we need to be informed and take action. Let’s all get dancing and make sure we stay healthy.” Other survey findings include: Aching joints: 23% Losing brain capacity 34% Poorer vision/eyes 6% Unhealthy heart 9% Reduced hearing 2% Emerging cancers 11% Weaker bones 3% Rising cholesterol 3% Developing diabetes 3% Lower energy levels 7% 1,661 people completed the Silversurfers.com survey. ** Silversurfers.com research has found that whilst doing puzzles is thought to be beneficial to improving memory other studies offer conflicting findings. - ends- For more information please contact: Denise Pritchard, marketing director, Silversurfers.com T: +44 (0) 208 133 4211 M: +44 (0) 7917 700 017 E: firstname.lastname@example.org About Silversurfers.com Silversurfers.com is a unique and informative lifestyle website and social network exclusively for the online community of over 50s.
