It seems Brits have discovered the real meaning of Christmas and it isn’t the biggest tree, most expensive presents and commercial extravagance we’re exposed to that matters. A recent survey by dotcomgiftshop.com has found that 98% of us say it’s the thought that counts rather than how much has been spent on a gift. It seems festive family rows might also be a Christmas myth - 78% say spending time with family is what they want most this Christmas and for 36% it’s about sharing good food. Although we clearly enjoy the sense of occasion - 56% have decorations up by early December - 29% of us have already taken them down by New Year’s Day. It also seems that the Christmas card is firmly on the decline in this technology driven age we now live in – 62% now send less than 30 cards. Christmas traditions are also somewhat surprising, nearly 1/3 open their presents in the afternoon, rather than the morning. Perhaps some have enjoyed a festive lie in? It seems that only 18% of us watch the Queen’s speech on Christmas Day and nearly as many (14%) tune in to the Eastenders’ Christmas special. There are however some traditions we aren’t prepared to break - not swayed by duck, goose or a bird inside a bird, 64% tuck in to a festive turkey. A whopping 76% also enjoy a serving of sprouts alongside, whether they like them or not. Christmas cake isn’t high on the agenda - 40% of us don’t bother and 35% aren’t fans of a Christmas pud either – surprising as this ranks as the most popular Christmas dinner dessert. The Yule log beats trifle in the ideal after dinner treat department too – 22% enjoy Yule log after their dinner, while only 16% scoff a sherry trifle. Post lunch it’s time to spend quality time with the family – 60% of us get out the games for some family fun.
