It’s not global warming you have to blame for bad outerwear sales, but your incorrect pricing, product and merchandizing tactics

Intelligence Node Launches Report On Outerwear Trends

London, January 17, 2017: Retail analytics and pricing intelligence leader Intelligence Node is releasing an in-depth analysis on the critical US outerwear sales segment over the holiday season.

The study, based on the firm’s unparalleled pricing intelligence derived from its global knowledge base of real-time retail movement, has found widespread markdowns in outerwear – which suggests the category is not selling as it did last year due to warmer temperatures.

The study suggests that retailers need to track the market more closely to succeed, and not abandon outerwear as a category due to unseasonal weather conditions.

It also found that the top selling coat style for Americans this Winter is the parka, followed by pea styles trench coats, while in the jackets segment bombers emerged as the US consumer’s top pick, closely followed by puffer and then denim jackets.

Maroon was the top choice in jackets so far this season, followed by beige/tan, indigo and magenta.

Other notable findings include that the overall average price point on jackets is $421, and with an average promotion of 10 percent. In the luxury sector, jackets have an average price point of $1,607, while in the accessible fashion outlet segment, jackets average $74. The top trending fabrics include polyester, followed by leather and cotton.

In the coat category, the average price point was $897. At the high end, price points averaged over $2,000. At accessible fashion outlets, the average was $102. Regarding color, black took the top spot, followed by blue, brown and grey. Wool was the number one fabric, followed by polyester, cotton and nylon.

With coats, the top trending style was the hood, followed by lapel and then collarless designs.

“Outerwear sales are critical for the retailer at this time of the year. To succeed in this hyper-competitive market, fashion apparel retailers need to have the right assortments,” commented Intelligence Node CEO and fashion sector commentator Sanjeev Sularia.

“During the colder months, retailers depend on an outerwear sales boost, but if they haven’t pinned down the right product assortment in the right styles and colors, then they will fail.

“It’s not global warming you have to blame for bad outerwear sales, but your incorrect pricing, product and merchandizing tactics.”
