Hide in luxury at seven-acre Welsh wood

Alternative holiday accommodation on the Glamoragn Heritage Coastline.

Inspired by American transcendental poetry and its love of nature, and showcasing the best of Welsh arts and crafts, Hide at St Donat's offers a range of unusual and stylish accommodation on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

Hide hosts Paula Warren and Tom Parker have created a unique retreat in an enchanting seven-acre woodland setting at Tresillian Wood, St Donat’s on this geologically-significant coastline.

Working in tune with nature, Hide comprises three cosy ‘caban’ studios and a quirky shepherd’s hut, set deep in the site’s arboretum. A ‘tiny house’, a romantic wooden lodge, is soon to be built.

Cabans
Hand-built by Tom and inspired by the meeting rooms once used in the Welsh mines, the cabans are furnished with Melin Tregwynt textiles and kept cosy with Chilli Penguin wood-burning stoves. Each caban sleeps two and has a private bathroom and kitchenette and its own terrace.

Shepherd’s Hut
The shepherd’s hut also sleeps two people and has its own private facilities. It features Welsh objets d’art including artwork by Claire Cawte.

Tiny House
Paula and Tom’s interest in romantic poetry led them to the transcendental movement of the eastern United States and the romantic lodges, cabins and tiny houses found in the region’s woods. Inspired by designs from Maryland, a 1920s-style ‘tiny house’ will be built at Hide. Hand-crafted, the lodge will offer a unique stay with nods of Welsh-American connections. The ‘tiny house’ will sleep four people.

Hide Pavilion
At the heart of the development lies the Hide Pavilion, a comfortable clubhouse featuring artwork by Christian Ryan, Joanna Howells and Iona Mcclaggan. Breakfast and evening drinks are served at the Pavilion, which can seat up to 26 people. For gatherings, full catering can be arranged. Free wi-fi is also available at the Pavilion.

Striking coastal and countryside walks are on Hide’s doorstep, while guests can enjoy beautiful views across the Bristol Channel to Somerset and the north Devon coast. Historic buildings and museums are close by, including St Donat’s Castle and the internationally-renowned Atlantic College.

The market towns of Llantwit Major and Cowbridge, with their boutiques, gift shops, bars and restaurants, are also close. The Welsh capital, Cardiff, with its many attractions, including the Wales Millennium Centre and the National Museum of Wales, home to an oustanding collection of Impressionist paintings, lies 20 miles to the east.

Hide is the brainchild of Paula Warren and her partner, Tom Parker. Paula was brought up in Ireland and South Wales and studied art. She worked in TV sports production and events in London and internationally before returning to Wales to train as a pilates teacher.

Tom, who was born in the Bahamas, has a business degree from Edinburgh University and co-owns a company designing and building wooden eco buildings.

Paula Warren explains:

“Hide combines Tom’s talents and expertise with my interest in the arts to create a unique Welsh retreat, where guests will be able to relax and enjoy beautiful surrounds in style.

“Every aspect of the site has a story to tell - from the tulip trees in the woods to the delightful works by Welsh artists.

“The cabans embody ‘cwtch’, the lovely Welsh word for an affectionate hug. There’s no literal English translation, but its nearest equivalent is safe place.”
