Benjamin was born on the 15th October 2013 seemingly completely healthy. At three days old and by complete chance he was diagnosed with a very serious and rare congenital heart defect - which had it been undetected for even a few short more hours would have rendered him brain damaged or dead.

His condition - Transposition of the Great Arteries with ventricular septal defect and mild pulmonary stenosis affects less than one in 3,000 children and was picked up by accident following a routine out-of-hours GP’s appointment for a minor stomach upset. Thanks to an overcautious duty doctor Benjamin was sent for sample testing within another part of the hospital (Alexandra Hospital Redditch). During the teams routine assessments for all new patients he underwent a pulse oximetry test – which reads the level of oxygen in the blood.
