Len Klejnow, Managing Director at specialist network reseller has criticised network managers for using "pre-historic technology" to manage their networks. According to Klejnow many organisations are using "so called" network management systems based on protocols that were designed in the 1980s. These are now totally out of step with what is needed for today’s distributed networks.

"It’s the equivalent of using a 286 machine running DOS as your preferred choice of PC," said Klejnow. "Some network managers are not quite as clever as they give themselves credit for."

Generix has announced they are now distributing the newly launched product - TeVista, which although being SNMP compatible also allows a much more efficient way of handling data through its proprietary protocol HSRmon

"The information that SNMP provides does not justify the amount of its bandwidth usage and a lot of it is spurious to requirements. It can put impossible burdens on the network itself and cause problems it is supposed to solve," said Generix’s TeVISTA product manager, Jason Batley.

"If the network fails because of a power failure, SNMP will send page after page of fault scripts of all the problems that have been caused, whereas all the network manager needs to know is that there’s a power failure so he can fix it," added Batley.

Whilst Generix acknowledges the value in SNMP as a method of managing devices and offers the ability to inter-work with SNMP with its TeVista product range, it believes that independently it is not an effective product.

Generix says that TeVISTA is simple and easy to understand and provides the information that network managers want to receive quickly and efficiently.

TeVista allows problems to be anticipated and prevented to give maximum network uptime. Unique HSRmon technology provides comprehensive, real-time management across low speed links. Total visibility is achieved without any blind-spots created by routers or switches.
