Some of Britain’s brightest business prospects have a "timid" attitude to entrepreneurial ventures in the aftermath of dotcom waverings and the recent collapse in hi-tech stocks. That’s the claim of award-winning businessman Bob Jones, who along with his latest company DICA Technologies Ltd, was honoured at the prestigious annual Growing Business Awards earlier this month.

Jones fought off fierce competition from five of his peers to receive the Entrepreneur of the Year Award, whilst DICA, the leading UK supplier of all-in-one appliance-based Internet security and web access solutions, came top of the list in the Most Promising Young Company of the Year category in the awards ceremony at the London Hilton on 6 December, staged by the Confederation of British Industry and Real Business magazine.

Now Jones, who founded DICA - then Equiinet - in 1998, has criticised British entrepreneurs for being overly cautious because of the change in market conditions. He believes they should be mindful of the current market environment, but he is encouraging them to plan for growth rather than standing still.

"It seems that many entrepreneurs have become timid. They prefer to retreat into their shells rather than take the carefully considered risks needed if one is to be successful," said Jones.

"It’s true that the technology market in particular has been hit hard in recent months, but resourceful venturers should do more than simply hide under the duvet. While there are some great new British businesses emerging, some people seem to be running scared from opportunities."

Jones is one of the UK's most successful businessmen. A 'serial' entrepreneur, he has founded and sold three data communications companies over the last 18 years, most recently Sonix Communications which was bought by 3Com for $70 million in 1995.

DICA has grown rapidly since its creation as Equiinet two years and now employs more than 50 people in Swindon. Its main product, the NetPilot secure server appliance, has become the UK market leader and is being sold all over the world. Equiinet merged with Berlin-based Internet security specialists DICA in August, bringing with it a change of name to DICA Technologies Ltd.

DICA Technologies is a global e-security company, which develops and supplies innovative, easy-to-install Internet security and web access products.
