87% identified a significant/moderate increase in electronic customer interaction in past 3 years

J.D. Edwards, a leading provider of agile, collaborative solutions for the Internet economy, today launched the results from independent research finding 80% of European directors cite electronic collaboration with customers and suppliers as a key determinant of company success.

This is the second phase of pan-European research conducted by TBC Research, working on behalf of J.D. Edwards. 150 finance, purchasing, logistics and operations directors were questioned from across the UK, Spain, Germany, Italy and France, all of whom were asked to comment on the following statement:

"Over the next three years the ability to collaborate electronically with our customers and suppliers will be a key determinant of our company's success."

Eight out of ten respondents either strongly agreed or agreed with the statement and just 3% disagreed. Of the five countries that were questioned, Spain came out top with the most number of company directors strongly supporting collaborative commerce, closely followed by the UK. However, Germany showed the weakest conformity.

The European directors were also asked to comment on their current pattern of customer interaction using electronic technology. 87% recorded a significant or moderate increase in electronic communication with customers and just 13% of those questioned said communication had remained the same when asked the following:

"Over the past three years would you say that your company's electronic interaction with customers has: significantly increased, moderately increased, or stayed about the same?"

Again Spain has been dominant in embracing electronic customer interaction, followed by France and the UK, however Italy has been the slowest to respond the new e-commerce era.

A strong pattern emerged across the departmental research and in all countries purchasing directors have been slowest at adopting Internet and email collaboration with external suppliers and customers. However, on both occasions the finance department shone through with the greatest foresight to the benefits of collaborating externally using electronic media.

Jyoti Banerjee, chief executive of TBC Research commented, "The research points to overwhelming momentum for the view that European companies are expecting future relationships with suppliers and customers to be electronic. Transforming themselves to take part in such B2B e-commerce is going to be a huge, but necessary, challenge given the pivotal role such electronic relationships will play in the competitive strategies of European firms.

"It is interesting to note that British and Spanish companies have less reservations about electronic relationships than German or French companies, possibly reflecting the strength of existing non-electronic relationships between suppliers and customers in the latter markets.
