ex-Taylor Woodrow Construction Chairman joins eu-supply

Bruce Russell, former chairman and MD of Taylor Woodrow Construction today joins the advisory board of, the construction industry e-procurement specialist.

"With an average 2% profit margin main contractors need to find better ways of doing business to improve competitiveness," says Mr Russell, a member of the Rethinking Construction committee. "Procurement is an important target for improvement. E-commerce offers new opportunities to increase efficiency and will have a major impact on profit. It is really about speed of adoption; the quick companies will gain competitive advantage while the ‘laggards’ will be forced to survive on tighter margins."

eu-supply’s services lead to reduced cycle times, and significantly less time and cost involved in document exchange and negotiations. In addition, it gives certainty of procuring at best market value through an online bidding process. Existing users are achieving overall average savings of 15%.

The company was formed in 1999 with 24million venture capital backing from International Capital Group (ICG), an Internet company actively engaged in business-to-business e-commerce providing operational assistance, capital support, industry expertise, and a strategic network of business relationships for business-to-business e-commerce companies. Already over 70 of the largest construction companies in Europe are working with eu-supply.

Patrick Destang, eu-supply’s UK managing director UK, says, "A third of the UK’s top 30 construction companies are currently piloting our service. We anticipate from our experience in France and Germany that three quarters of these companies will adopt online procurement as their main purchasing process and become increasingly frequent users of our service."

Mr Russell joins Andrew Mackenzie, former chief executive of Bryant Group, on the eu-supply advisory board. Their goal is to reinforce eu-supply’s industry knowledge with their in depth construction and house building experience. This is key to eu-supply’s ability to stay ahead of the competition and deliver greater benefits for the industry.

eu-supply is staffed by experienced people from within the construction industry, whose knowledge of procurement practices and the supply market, linked to the online capability of the service, bring fundamental improvements to profitability.

Mr Russell has 32 years of construction industry experience. He was involved in a number of major projects and departments globally before being appointed managing director of Taylor Woodrow International Ltd in 1991 where he was responsible for large scale reorganisation and substantial profit growth.

He was appointed Managing Director of Taylor Woodrow Construction Ltd in January 1993 where he was in charge of merging overseas and UK company operations. He was also responsible for the development of turnkey projects, project financing, design and construction management.

Mr Russell sits on a number of industry based committees including the Movement for Innovation in Construction and Respect for People in Construction. He has a BSc in Civil Engineering from Leeds University and he has an MSc in Highway Engineering, and Diploma in Construction Management from City University in London.
