Using Afaria, Handheld Computers Running Palm OS Can Be Centrally Managed
Along with Laptops and Other Mobile Device Deployments

XcelleNet, Inc., a leading provider of mobile resource management solutions, today announced that AfariaÔ, its mobile resource management solution, can now be used to deploy and update anti-virus software to handheld computers running the Palm OSÒ platform. According to industry analysts, Palm PoweredÔ handhelds are the most widely-used handheld computing resource in the world.

Using Afaria’s Software Manager, enterprises can centrally deliver virus scanning software, from such industry leaders as Symantec, F-Secure and McAfee, to Palm Powered handhelds. Once installed, Afaria assures that the most up-to-date anti-virus definitions are delivered seamlessly and reliably to these handhelds whenever the user connects to the organisation’s information infrastructure.

Afaria also provides critical anti-virus protection to a broad range of mobile devices including laptops and other handheld platforms.

The Afaria solution extends other essential systems management capabilities, including software deployment, hardware and software asset tracking, information exchange and system back-up, to mobile devices that are not continuously connected to the corporate information infrastructure. The ability to remotely manage anti-virus software from some of the industry’s leading anti-virus solution vendors on the popular Palm OS platform will go a long way towards addressing potential future virus problems for many handheld users, while providing the organisation with a single solution to utilise across all mobile device types.

"XcelleNet’s solution allows IT departments to be proactive in providing virus protection for all types of mobile devices," said Tim Scannell, senior analyst for Mobile Insights, Inc., a premier provider of information on the mobile computing and wireless industries. "With Palm Powered handhelds being deployed as a component of enterprise solutions, it is critical that IT provide the necessary protection for them."

"We’ve been a leader in delivering important management functionality, including anti-virus protection, to laptops computers for over a decade," said Yad Jaura, European Marketing Manager at XcelleNet. "Now with enterprises using other types of mobile devices to mobilise an even larger segment of their workforces, our management capabilities will play a critical role in the success of these deployments."
