Retail Business Solutions Ltd (RBS), a consulting firm and XcelleNet reseller, known throughout the UK for its expertise in retail technology, assessed the needs of CarpetRight and proposed XcelleNet’s RemoteWare as the solution. Prior to implementing XcelleNet’s RemoteWare, each of CarpetRight’s 338 stores reported daily sales transactions to headquarters via fax, or even by mail. Once the paper documents were received, the data had to be entered by hand into the company’s central UNIX computer. It was an error-prone process that could take days or even weeks. The company needed a way to automate data collection and order processing, as well as a way to regularly download information to the individual stores from headquarters. RemoteWare now communicates three times each night with all 338 CarpetRight stores scattered throughout the United Kingdom. The first communications session retrieves the day’s sales data, then sends a current status report on all the store’s outstanding orders to CarpetRight’s warehouse. The next phase of the session delivers updated product and pricing information to the store locations. The final session performs a check and balance routine to ensure no errors occurred during the previous sessions. CarpetRight Project Manager, Julian Griffiths explains, "RemoteWare has now given us more control over what goes on in the stores. Previously, many people were rather careless about doing the end-of-day reports, and many of the store procedures were not policed at all. With the implementation of RemoteWare, the stores are forced to input their sales each day, and the central office is forced to make sure the books balance every night. The nightly data sharing has also made it possible for store employees to improve customer service, allowing them to provide immediate answers about the status of carpet orders, from cutting to shipping."
