Enterasys Wireless LAN Delivers Seamless Access & Training Capabilities and Prepares School for Future Expanded Learning Program.

Enterasys Networks, a leader in enterprise networking, today announced that UK-based Ninestiles School, a recognised leader in the use of Information Communications Technology (ICT), has selected Enterasys’ RoamAboutTM Wireless technology to provide a highly mobile and secure LAN environment, allowing teachers and students to turn classrooms into temporary high-tech computer suites. Through the utilisation of RoamAbout Access Points and Cards, teaching staff have access to curricular resources, CD Rom information, Internet and innovative classroom software for recording daily attendance and marking results. The solution was selected and implemented in association with TCPIP LTD, a UK technology consultancy retained by Ninestiles School.

Mike Crowston, ICT Development at Ninestiles School commented, "It was an essential pre-condition to identify a wireless technology provider that could offer a solution to meet our own specific needs. A reliable wireless environment was the platform for our future investment."

Ninestiles School, based in Birmingham in the heart of England, is a secondary school teaching 1,400 pupils from ages 11 through 18. Built across one large campus site, the educational institution is aiming to offer portable computing access and IT resources to all pupils and teachers, improving the quality of teaching and learning, and increasing the flexibility and accessibility to ICT. So recognised is the school’s achievements that newly-appointed Chief of Schools in the UK, Mike Tomlinson, said following a recent UK Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) Inspection Report: "Of the 1,650 secondary schools receiving a full inspection for the second time since September 1997, the teaching quality profile of Ninestiles School is the best of any comprehensive school. A tremendous achievement by all the staff and all those who support the work of the school."

Supporting its GNVQ (Government National Vocation Qualification) IT course, currently available to its year 10 pupils, Ninestiles School has integrated Enterasys’ RoamAbout Access Cards within 180 laptops, allowing teaching staff and students to seamlessly access its wired infrastructure. Twelve Enterasys RoamAbout Access Points have also been deployed across the campus, allowing freedom of connection from any of its classrooms, necessitating the requirement of costly cabling and fixed wiring. The wireless solution brings complete mobility to IT resources, increasing the pupil-to-laptop access ratio.

The wireless infrastructure is also preparing the school for future projects, including the expansion of its GNVQ IT courses to additional pupils. In turn, the school’s positive experience with TCPIP Ltd, Enterasys and its technology, is also leading to the development and support of its innovative 24x7 learning website, expected to go live within the next six months. The site will allow students to continue learning out of normal school hours, providing the ability to gain access to coursework, homework, study guides and numerous resources online.

"Governors, staff and pupils are now convinced that wireless technology is the way forward and that future development can be sustained. Our parents, too, are excited by the potential and the opportunities that 24x7 access will offer them to become more involved in their children’s learning." concluded Dexter Hutt, headteacher at Ninestiles.

"All schools today have the same problem. How do they promote new forms of learning and improve access to technology for pupils? They have these challenges to face in buildings that could be many years old, geographically disparate, and with limited IT resources, with low ratios of PC's to pupils. Enterasys’ RoamAbout solution has enabled Ninestiles School to quickly and efficiently create IT classrooms, without the overhead of a PC per desktop or fixed wiring systems that take time to connect and cost money, both in terms of capital outlay and running and support costs. Enterasys wireless technology could be the future for all educational establishments, bringing the power of IT to every pupil." said Vice President for UK & Ireland at Enterasys Networks, Stefan Michal.

Enterasys’ RoamAbout solutions include standards-based 11 Mbps (Wi-Fi ready) wireless products for both indoor and outdoor environments, including radio cards, a versatile access point, and a variety of antenna options. For more information on RoamAbout solutions, visit Enterasys’ web site at
