Gemplus, the world’s smart business leader, has identified the defence
market as the next sector to see a marked increase in the take up of
secure smart solutions. Already, several security solutions based on
Gemplus core hardware have achieved CAPS (CESG Assisted Products Scheme)
approval and are currently being used by the Ministry of Defence. The CAPS
scheme verifies security products to HMG cryptographic standards, meaning
that they are formally approved for use by HMG to protect sensitive
government data.

Gemplus gained initial exposure in the defence market through partnership
with Topsoft Ltd, a specialist provider of IT security solutions. Topsoft
is supplying its own security products, based on Gemplus’ GemSAFE
technology, to Government Departments. All are designed to offer
exceptionally high security assurance and, where required in specific
customer environments, individual components have been submitted for CAPS
approval.

One of the main areas of focus for Gemplus over the coming months will be
that of securing access to the mission-critical information held within
defence organisations. The MoD demands much higher security controls than
other organisations due to the nature of the information it holds.
However, employees must be able to access certain pieces of information,
and must be able to gain access to rooms to work efficiently, even those
containing computers storing highly sensitive information.

Andrew Leigh, Head of E-Business Security at Gemplus, says, "The
consequences of security breaches can be disastrous - but they are
avoidable. Defence organisations must be able to empower employees to
access information when they need to, but this must be in a controlled and
managed way to protect highly confidential information. This is where
Gemplus’ smart access solutions such as GemSAFE come into the picture."
