New research shows that many UK sites see the ASP model as a foundation for the corporate portal

London, January 23rd 2001 - Recent research indicates that IT departments see the ASP model as a viable option for use internally within their organisation. The survey, which was co-sponsored by ASP enabler SevenMountains Software, shows that 72% of IT manager respondents would use the ASP model internally. These results reflect the interest in corporate portals. A recent market study conducted by the Meta Group predicted the uptake of portal technology to reach 54.3% within two years. 85% of organisations believed that they would be investing in a portal during the next 5 years.

Patrick Coates, Managing Director at SevenMountains Software expands: "The corporate portal model has been growing steadily in popularity and there is a natural fit between that approach and the ASP model. The enthusiasm for the use of the ASP model internally is encouraging as that step facilitates the integration of internal services with the services from external ASPs. This integration is transparent to the end user and will mean that companies can mix and match services from which ever source provides the best business advantages.

The use of open standard technologies such as Java is imperative for successful implementations of this approach. That is a primary reason why Java was used as the basis for web enabling applications and data with 7M Integrate and 7M Apsire. This not only allows the inclusion of legacy environments but also makes the product ‘future-proof’ as new technologies develop."

Dr. Simon Moores, Co-chairman of the ASP Community adds, "These results are indicative of the growing acceptance of the ASP model by the IT decision maker at large. The survey shows a growing awareness not only of the technology, but also of the benefits that it can bring. It is interesting to note how many organisations are looking for what is in effect the best of both worlds, the flexibility offered by ASP, coupled with the peace of mind that retaining internal control will bring."
