London, U.K. January 24, 2001 - Reuters Greenhouse Fund, the venture capital arm of the global information and news group, led a consortium of investors in the latest round of funding in LinkGuard Ltd., the company building the first complete map of the Web. LinkGuard, based in Maidenhead, U.K., is indexing over 100 billion links through its patented Intelligent Link Management (ILM) services. As part of the investment, Reuters executive Deepak Shahdadpuri will join the LinkGuard Board of Directors.
Reuters’ investment in LinkGuard is part of a £4.8 million total investment that also includes financing from previous LinkGuard investors GE Equity, NewMedia SPARK and Quester. The investment follows LinkGuard’s initial round of £5 million in June 2000.
LinkGuard will use the funds to strengthen its U.S. operations, launch the LinkGuard LinkMap and build key partnerships with leading search engines, e-commerce companies and Internet Service Providers. The alliance will also provide LinkGuard with strategic access to Reuters’ portfolio of companies.
"We are thrilled to receive this kind of validation in a time when market conditions have been volatile and most companies have had fewer venture funding opportunities," said Franck Jeannin, founder and CEO of LinkGuard, Ltd. "Like LinkGuard, Reuters believes in the value of our technology. It is this synergy that will drive our services to market and improve the ecology of the Web."
"We are delighted to have had this opportunity to fund another innovative U.K.-based business," said John Taysom, Founder and Co-CEO of Reuters Greenhouse Fund. "LinkGuard is a great addition to our portfolio of Internet Infrastructure companies, providing groundbreaking technology to the marketplace, like Verisign, Phone.com and Orchestream. We look forward to watching the further development of the business over the coming years."
LinkGuard’s ILM technology helps Web professionals improve the quality of their Web sites. LinkGuard’s services offer total protection from broken links and their consequences, saving Web developers, designers and marketers time and money on managing a Web site.
"Anyone with a Web presence relies on the stickiness of their site to attract and retain visitors. Broken links dangerously interfere with this capability and can negatively affect e-commerce," said Darcy Fowkes, Research Director at the Aberdeen Group. "LinkGuard’s Intelligent Link Management technology addresses this problem and enables organizations, communities and industries to get the site stickiness they need to prosper online."
