Tonic Software, the Internet infrastructure solution provider, has identified an emerging trend whereby UK companies are increasingly using benchmarking tools to measure the performance of their own web sites against competitors. The move marks a significant development in the way companies deploy Web Application Management (WAM) tools to gather market intelligence about their e-business infrastructure.

"In talking to potential clients, as many as one in three companies are requesting tools to test the performance of competitor web sites in order to compare it with their own performance levels", says Tony Budd, Tonic’s European Sales Director. "The internal evaluations that companies have conducted on their own web sites are now being replaced with a more holistic approach that considers the e-business performance of others in the marketplace. This more strategic approach is to be applauded."

The WAM market has seen considerable growth in the last six months with analysts expecting the market to generate £0.8 billion in revenues by 2002 (Source: Bear Stearns & Co. Inc.). This figure is expected to rise as the recent demise of several dot.coms force online businesses to constantly evaluate their online presence to optimise web visitors' experience.

IT professionals at the country’s top e-tailers are especially keen to monitor the performance of competitors. As Tony Budd explains, "The sector has witnessed major disruptions, with a number of major consumer web sites literally grinding to a halt from traffic increase during busy periods, such as Christmas. It seems that companies are not keen to repeat the same mistakes and IT managers are looking for tools to verify performance levels to the board."

Using Tonic’s solutions, IT professionals are able to fully automate competitor monitoring. Easy to install and configure, its WAM solution enables companies to develop flexible evaluation programmes that can monitor any competitor at any time to provide a comprehensive marketplace review.

In addition to monitoring competitor sites, Tonic’s solutions can also be used to undertake a wide range of internal, quality-check diagnostics; from continually monitoring site performance from a customer perspective to providing immediate warnings should the site’s performance drop below pre-defined tolerance levels. This allows businesses to review and rectify potential infrastructure and application problems before they impact online customers and other site users.

"In today’s e-economy it is becoming increasingly important for IT professionals to prove that the web strategy is contributing to the bottom-line. Twelve months ago it might have been enough to have a flashy web site but today it’s the back-end infrastructure and flawless functionality that will secure success", concludes Tony Budd.
