The first service in the world to allow ordinary web users to create their own voice and WAP "home page" was launched by Birmingham (UK) based voice Internet pioneer Waperture today. The FreeText service lets users create their content in seconds, and for free. The content can then be heard instantaneously on any phone (mobile or land-line), and as an added bonus viewed from any WAP phone. FreeText lets users quickly post information directly to the web which can then be accessed from any voice or WAP telephone.

This another world-first for UK wireless specialists Waperture’s impressive portfolio of public services, and the first major upgrade to the BrowseByPhoneTM Voice Internet Service, which was only launched last November (2000).

Waperture’s existing GataGrab service allows any business or individual to grab an existing web page from the Internet. It then displays the relevant contents on a WAP phone and allows users to hear the content as speech on any wired or mobile (wireless) phone! The latest addition, GataGrab FreeText, takes the service a major step forward and allows customers to simply create their own free-text content. They just type the text into a GataGrab form, pick up a phone and listen to it. The content can be accessed as WAP, voice, and HTML.

David Shaw, Marketing Manager of Waperture said, "We can foresee a wide variety of uses for GataGrab FreeText. We think it will be particularly attractive to small and medium sized businesses without a developed web presence. They will find it a quick and easy way to establish both a WAP "home page" and a simple voice information line. For many small businesses these can be almost more relevant than having a web site. Businesses can also use FreeText as a virtual "scratch pad", with the office copying text into it to be picked up by sales reps or anyone else on the move from their phone, e.g. directions or latest price list."

Shaw continues, "In some areas we feel that GataGrab FreeText might even rival conventional pre-recorded voice services. It is a lot quicker and cheaper to set up, and the content can be changed on a monthly, weekly, daily or even hourly basis directly by the user and without charge. Anybody involved in outdoor activities or event management can use the service to quickly post information to be accessed by their members, clients or delegates en-route or at a venue. For example, it would make a brilliant bulletin board that could be used as the prime ‘stop press’ information channel as any phone can be used to access the content"

GataGrab FreeText can also be used to access web content which is otherwise inaccessible to GataGrab users. For instance some web pages embed text in Javascript, Flash or Word or PDF documents. With GataGrab FreeText a user can just cut and paste this text into a FreeText form to be able to access it by voice and WAP.

Since Waperture is an Application Service Provider (ASP) the service needs no downloadable software and can even be set up from a Cyber-café PC.

Shaw continues "As before, we have teamed up with the Cambridge-based speech technology experts Vocalis to provide this unique and world first facility. We also announced last time that we were in confidential talks with a prominent news feed service provider and I am pleased to report that testing of the service is well in hand. The world-wide interest since our launch has been amazing and we will be pleased to hear from anyone who feels our technology can add value to their offering."

Waperture also believe their technology can help bring web access to those who have struggled to benefit from the web in the past. They are keen to investigate applications for the visually impaired community. BrowseByPhoneTM can genuinely bring the web alive over a simple house phone.

Shaw concludes "The next release of FreeText will even allow you to update the content from the field using a WAP phone - making it event more useful to those in the great outdoors".

The BrowseByPhoneTM service can be accessed on the Internet from or, and over WAP from To access from a telephone dial 0906 214 2393 to hear a demonstration or 0906 214 1881 for the live service. Both are premium rate lines charging 25p/minute for ordinary BT phone users - there are no additional set-up or subscription costs. Rates from mobile phones and other telephone companies may vary. Waperture are currently evaluating a subscription-based service to allow voice access to the Internet at national, local or even freephone rates.

WAP is a new international standard for providing information services and Internet access over mobile phones. All 4 UK cellular networks now offer WAP access, and all major phone manufacturers have WAP based products.

Voice Internet is a growing market in USA where companies such as TellMe and BeVocal are already well established. Waperture’s BrowseByPhone was the first public access Voice Internet service to be launched in the UK.
