Using technology from RC Networks, Inc., Bankside Business Centre today becomes one of the first UK serviced office owners to offer in-building SDSL services to tenants. End-users can specify anything up to 2Mbps of bandwidth, which is directly available at the point of use. Bankside Business Centre believes that this move places it far ahead of its competitors in terms of the cost-effective bandwidth it can offer tenants.

"Organisations are demanding high-speed internet access and it is essential that we can provide the services our clients want at a reasonable price," explains Peter Wonnacott, managing director, Bankside Business Centre in London. "For many business tenants and building owners there has been no satisfactory solution to fill the gap between expensive dedicated E1 lines and slow dial-up connections, but the SDSL solution from RC Networks changes that. We can now enable bandwidth-hungry applications such as video-conferencing by leveraging the high-speed connection among building tenants. In this way, customers can receive as much bandwidth as they require from the shared resource and only pay for what they need. This makes high-speed internet access easy to afford."

Bankside Business Centre uses one RC8000Plus Access Concentrator in the basement at each site and a RC2000 SDSL Router in each client's office. The SDSL runs over the existing copper wires with voice within the building meaning there is no need for any rewiring. The system is managed by an in-house IT team who control and monitor the bandwidth supplies to each customer.

"Prior to implementing the RC Networks solution, we were offering open access to a leased line. We were buying a 256k supply with a 2Mbps burst capability. However, the high-use clients monopolised the line and charging was difficult. In addition, we had to pay a penalty every time we used the burst facility, which cost about £20,000 each year. It was not a working solution, and we nearly pulled the plug on the whole thing. Then we found out about RC Networks and how they could solve our problem. Now, we can provide each customer with as much bandwidth as they require, and ensure that charging is accurate. This means our clients get the level of service they need," continues Wonnacott.

RC Networks' high-speed, SDSL access products are targeted at service providers and property managers who realise the growing need to provide broadband services and applications in multi-tenant unit (MTU) office buildings easily and profitably. The company's solution enables high-speed internet access, as well as integrated data, voice and video services, over a building's existing telephone wiring.

"The implementation at Bankside Business Centre demonstrates the type of service levels that business tenants require industry-wide," says Michelle Conyers, vice president of international sales, RC Networks. "By using our SDSL solution, Bankside implemented low-cost, high-speed internet access that they could easily deploy and manage in-house. The simplicity and flexibility of the solution means that high-speed broadband access can be readily available for service providers and multi-tenant building owners who want to implement it."

Bankside Business Centre ( is a London-based service office provider with over 60 clients including IT companies, recruitment agencies and insurance brokers. RC Networks is a leading provider of broadband, high-speed internet access products for multi-tenant office buildings and hotels. SDSL provides an always-on, high bandwidth, two-way connection that is ideal for voice and data business applications compared with the one-way capabilities of ADSL, which are limited to internet access and downloading material.
