SurfControl Announces Content Filtering Engine SDK for ISPs, ASPs, Search Engines and Web Devices Monday 5 February 2001 PDF Print SDK enables integration of powerful Internet filtering into a range of applications and environments SurfControl, the world leader in solutions for responsible Internet usage has announced availability of its SurfControl Content Filtering Engine software developer kit (SDK). The SDK enables integration of SurfControl's market- leading web filtering application into a range of third-party applications, products and environments, giving value-added filtering services. The SDK means that application and product development teams can build Internet site and content filtering technology into search engines, ISP services, firewalls, proxy servers and so on. Using SurfControl's site databases and filters, the SDK delivers control over access to illegal or offensive material and ensures productive Internet use in almost any environment. The Content Filtering Engine SDK includes a range of site and content filters, and productivity filters which restrict access to non-work related sites for use in business applications. The SurfControl database, updated daily, lists millions of sites in 21 categories to ensure that filters are kept up to date. For use in ISP applications, SurfControl's content filtering engine handles over 10,000 URLs per second. It provides individual filtering, where parameters can be set and managed for individual users. It also includes central filtering, for managing groups of individuals such as corporate or educational groups. The SurfControl SDK is already in use at leading search engines AltaVista and excite. AltaVista's Family Friendly search enables users to use filtering at the search level, so inappropriate search results are not displayed. Excite's @Home broadband service uses SurfControl for filtering customer access. According to SurfControl, increasing public uptake of fixed-price internet access deals from ISPs is creating strong demand for centrally-hosted content filtering services from domestic web users. Furthermore, lobby groups are increasingly vocal in campaigning to stop the risk of children encountering pornographic, hate or other undesirable sites. The company believes that more imaginative ISPs will take advantage of the opportunity to differentiate their offering from those offering connection-only services. Nick Outteridge, director of OEM technology partnerships at SurfControl commented: "The SDK means that a range of web-related applications and services can add value to their offerings by integrating our advanced filtering technology. Its flexibility and centralised management suit it ideally to ISP- type applications."
