An Internet Service Provider in Germany is using new web enabled technology to identify users of child pornography on the World Wide Web. By implementing an Internet scanner called Perkeo, service provider uni-X in conjunction with Germany's federal anti-crime organisation known as Bundeskeiminalamts Wiesbaden, has already arrested a man in Tokyo. It is believed that uni-X is the first ISP to use this type of technology world-wide.

The 34 year old japanese man, was found to own a large peadophilic database accounting for over 750 indecent files. The authorities already suspected that an individual from Japan was uploading immoral files in an Internet Newsgroup. Using Perkeo developed by a German company called Autem, uni-X is able to uncover illegal pictures on the Internet, by recognising specific pixels. Perkeo then scans the appropriate servers and subsequently traces the owner of the files. So far, this technique has proved highly successful, as paedophiles will always store large numbers of files which can then be detected using Perkeo's exhaustive database.

Uni-x has been fighting against Child pornography since 1997 and has set up a dedicated web site

which highlights recently discovered sites and users.

Both uni-X and the Bundeskeiminalamts hope to catch more offenders in the future and expect that other service providers will soon follow in adopting Perkeo in a bid to fight child pornography world-wide.
