IBM and Swizzels Matlow Bring Love Hearts, Fizzers and Parma Violets for Loved Ones on Valentine's Day Thursday 15 February 2001 PDF Print ......It's official. The way to your loved one's heart is through their stomach with some of Britain's best loved confectionery. With the help of some killer IBM technology, that's what the folks at Swizzels Matlow, one of Britain's best known confectioners are proving. For Valentine's Day, its new web site - www.forgetflowers.com - shipped three Royal Mail vans full of half kilo gift boxes containing Britain's best loved sweets - Love Hearts, Drumsticks, Fizzers, Double Lollies and Parma Violets - all destined to make loved-one's feel special. Swizzels Matlow worked with Byford Computers, one of IBM's top business partners, to implement their new e-commerce site. The site was built on IBM's industry-leading WebSphere software platform and DB2 database, all running on a new IBM xSeries (formerly Netfinity) server. This leading-edge technology has allowed Swizzels to web-enable its back-end systems and automate the entire forgetflowers.com service. Having been operational for only a few months, St Valentine's Day was the first real test for the site. A spot on GMTV's This Morning earlier this week proved the catalyst for hundreds of people to race to their PCs, log on to the site and order their sweetheart a last minute half kilo of Love Hearts. The site exceeded expectations - all orders received before the St Valentine's Day deadline were dispatched on time. Allan Unsworth, IT Manager at Swizzels Matlow, said: "Interestingly, the largest number of orders came from London - with customers first sending orders to themselves to test the system, before making repeat orders a second and third time and sending gifts to their friends." Guy Lloyd, Business Manager for IBM WebSphere, UK, said: "We're delighted to help put some of Britain's best loved icons back in the limelight. I'd say that, like me, the folks buying from the site will be returning to some of these great sweets from times past. This is yet another great example of IBM technology breathing life back into some very precious assets."
