....RSPB first in UK to implement Sybase Spatial Query to
store and analyse bird sightings, habitats and other
conservation data...

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has
chosen Sybase technology and professional services in a
£750,000 project, called Project Griffin, to aid its
conservation work across the United Kingdom. Project Griffin
will have the capacity to hold 20 million historic and
future records on birds, sites and habitats collected by the
RSPB and other collaborating conservation organisations. The
initiative is believed to be the largest non-government
conservation IT implementation in Europe.

The project, which will be the first to use Sybase Spatial
Query Server (SQS) in the UK, will involve the development
and implementation of the new system for the RSPB in three
phases over the next two years. It will also use SQL Server
11 database management system, Sybase Open Client middleware
and MapInfo Professional software. Other products evaluated
and rejected included Oracle's Spatial Data Option (SDO) and
MapInfo's Spatialware.

Data will be accessible to staff based at RSPB locations
including its headquarters in Sandy, Bedfordshire and
offices such as in Exeter, Inverness and the Shetland
Islands, using the RSPB WAN and LAN infrastructure.

The implementation will be developed on a Sun Ultra 2170
server and hosted on a Sun production server provided under
the RSPB's corporate partnership with Sun Microsystems.

According to Melanie Bryer, Griffin project manager, the
RSPB has chosen Sybase as the supplier of the RSPB's
strategic relational database management system. Sybase
recently announced shipment of Adaptive Server Enterprise
11.5, a key part of the company's new Sybase Adaptive Server
database product family that delivers predictable high
performance in enterprise computing environments. Adaptive
Server Enterprise 11.5 is the compatible successor to Sybase
SQL Server 11. "The project had already identified MapInfo
as the most suitable front-end for the Griffin application.
Sybase is able to offer a proven product in SQS and is able
to demonstrate all of the products working together. Sybase
is responsive and professional in dealing with enquiries.
Finally, it was thought that there is a good fit between
them and the RSPB and that they were a company with which
RSPB could build a long term relationship", explained Bryer.

"The Sybase solution will allow users to incorporate
familiar Ordnance Survey maps into their work and provide
good presentational facilities. Sybase technologies have a
track record of being implemented on systems using similar
data volumes to our requirements. No other products had such
track records," she added.

Sybase Professional Services (SPS) is working with the RSPB
Griffin team to design the system. SPS will advise on the
proposed technical architecture, provide on-going support
and deliver skills transfer to RSPB staff.

Spatial Analysis and Conservation

Spatial analysis will be used to answer a number of
important conservation questions. A typical query might ask
‘in the last 5 years, which bird species have bred within
2km of this proposed new road ?' The ability to interrelate
various types of data will help to determine relationships
between them and the effects of changes of one environmental
factor to another. For example, bird counts could be
examined in relation to habitats, pollution incidents and
sites threatened by development.

"I am very pleased that Sybase's technological leadership
and professional expertise has been able uniquely to deliver
to the society the products and services that will really
make a difference in this crucial project to better protect
birds and their environment," said Colin Tenwick, vice
president and general manager of Sybase UK.
