iPass announces iPassConnect PDA for the Palm OS ® platform and iPassConnect PDA for the Microsoft Windows-powered Pocket PC and Windows-powered mobile devices to provide business travelers with secure access to corporate resources

LONDON - (February 21, 2001) - iPass™ Inc., a premier provider of global remote Internet access services, today announced the release of its iPassConnect™ PDA solutions, enabling mobile professionals to quickly, easily and securely access the Internet and corporate resources from a handheld device from anywhere in the world, via a dial-up connection.

Furthering the iPass mission to support remote access anywhere, any time, from any device, iPassConnect PDA for Palm OS platform and iPassConnect PDA for the Microsoft Windows-powered Pocket PC and other Windows-powered mobile devices will give road warriors easy access to the iPass global network of over 10,000 points of presence (POPs) worldwide. Remote users will be able to use supported devices from manufacturers such as Palm, Handspring and IBM as well as Pocket PC/Windows-powered mobile devices from Compaq, Casio and Hewlett Packard to easily connect to the Internet or corporate enterprise servers from the road.

Included in iPassConnect PDA for Palm OS and Pocket PC/Windows-powered mobile devices is the flexibility for users to easily select their own POPs with the new iPassSync point-and-click interface. Users may easily select from over 10,000 iPass POPs, classified by location, and automatically download them to their handheld device by synching up the device with a laptop or PC also equipped with the iPassConnect software. Up to 500 POPs may be easily loaded into iPassConnect PDA for Palm OS and 1000 may be loaded into iPassConnect PDA for Pocket PC/Windows-powered mobile devices.

iPass also enables users of iPassConnect PDA to establish a secure VPN session to corporate resources through compatibility with VPN client software from Certicom (Nasdaq:CERT; TSE:CIC), created specifically for handheld devices. Once the user establishes a secure connection with iPassConnect PDA, the user launches movianVPNÔ and logs in from the remote location to the VPN gateway for access to company databases and application servers. Information is then easily and securely transmitted via IPSec protocols.

“By integrating global remote access with VPNs on handheld devices, iPass has clearly filled in a first of the critical links in the drive for delivering a pervasive computing solution to corporations,” stated Matthew Kovar, program manager at the Yankee Group. “This handheld solution represents the logical progression from laptops to truly mobile platforms that will enable a diverse set of businesses to increase their efficiencies and revenues by accelerating the speed at which business is conducted.”

"Increasingly, professionals need secure, mobile access to their corporate email and other data from their corporate server,” said Douglas Dedo, group product manager of the Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. “Microsoft is delighted that iPass is offering technology that enables Pocket PC users to access this essential data.”

Additional features of iPassConnect PDA for Palm OS and iPassConnect PDA for Pocket PC/Windows-powered mobile devices include:
Secure, 128-bit SSL encryption of authentication requests.
Easy-to-use point-and-click interface with a stylus
Dialing intelligence to automatically support international dialing rules
Automatic password saves
Service level management data captures to report on the user experience

“We saw a need in the mobile workforce to make corporate remote access easy, reliable and accessible. The two iPassConnect PDA offerings literally put information in the hands of those who need it most, whenever they need it,” said Michael Mansouri, chairman and CEO of iPass.
