Universal Manufacturing and Logistics Ltd (UM&L), part of the newly-formed, French owned Vivendi Universal Group, has awarded Digica a five-year IT outsourcing contract worth £500,000.

Midrange and desktop specialist Digica is providing 24 x 7 operations and technical support for Universal’s desktop, server and AS/400 environments.

The server, running Novell Netware, is monitored for system errors and capacity issues by an on site engineer dedicated specifically to UML. The support engineer will be responsible for local infrastructure including specified desktop operating systems such as Windows NT, Office 97 and Microsoft Exchange.

The communications network, including LAN related issues, will be supported on a first line basis by Digica, who will undertake initial problem diagnosis to determine probable cause and, if necessary, will swap out the necessary equipment as well as undertaking responsibility for LAN administration.

Digica is also providing remote operations for Universal’s AS/400 620. The machine, which remains on UM&L’s site at Blackburn, is supported on a
24 x 7 basis by Digica’s Operations Management Centre, which ensures maximum availability for the business-critical UM&L machine.

Digica’s Support Centre will provide a single point of contact to users for all technical issues. Calls will be tracked through their lifecycle until the user is satisfied that the problem may be closed.

Dave Hawksworth, Technology manager at UM&L commented, “Digica were awarded the contract based on their overall capability to match both the AS400 and desktop requirements of UM&L at a competitive price. Their response to our detailed tender document, reinforced by visits to the Digica datacentre in Nottingham and an existing customer, convinced us of their technical competence and customer focus.”
