The Department of Trade and Industry has launched a Web-based publications@dti service ( produced and operated by ec logistics to departmental specifications.

Providing a seamless service

Under contract to the Department, ec logistics – the specialist in warehousing, fulfilment and distribution services – has been handling the fulfilment of DTI publications via traditional order channels – telephone, fax, post and email – for the last three years.
The new online system enables users to browse, search and order direct from the Web catalogue using ec logistics’ bespoke real-time fulfilment system. Once an order is placed, the user receives instant confirmation of details online and by email – then the order is automatically released for despatch without any additional handling or administration.
Users can search the catalogue by keyword and topic to order items 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as well as making real time enquiries on previous Web orders using their own unique customer number and chosen password.
The system handles orders for the 1,500 publications stocked and fulfilled by ec logistics together with a further 500 publications held off-site by third parties. In addition to making printed publications available, the system also allows users to download documents in pdf and html formats and provides links to other sources of information within the DTI.
Integrating Internet and logistics
– an end-to-end solution for literature and product fulfilment
What sets ec logistics' solution apart from other Internet offerings is real end-to-end capability – not only does it provide catalogue and ordering systems, it also includes the data management systems to control catalogue range and stock levels together with managing all aspects of despatch and delivery.
All aspects of the fulfilment of DTI publications are managed at ec logistics’ Sevenoaks site, including: order processing and accounting, inventory management and location control, and despatch and delivery. ec logistics also provides mailing services together with detailed reporting of activity on a regular basis.
"Until recently the principal emphasis in ecommerce has been on the design and the technical aspects of Web applications, but the ordering and fulfilment processes are just as important for the success of any transaction-based site," commented Chris Long, managing director of ec logistics.
"At ec logistics we recognise the need to integrate Internet and logistics operations and we’ve developed the expertise and resources to incorporate both activities to provide an extremely efficient single fulfilment solution for e-business."
