28th February 2001: Copernicus Global Billing Services Ltd (Copernicus) has implemented a Managed Service Provider (MSP) service to deliver personalised billing documents for next-generation communications and service providers using the DOC1 package from Group 1 Software. This rapidly expanding marketplace dictates that these new service providers are able to offer competitive billing based on an infinite and rapidly changing number of charging algorithms.

Group 1’s DOC1 system is at the heart of the Copernicus system for producing bill images, and all appropriate billing documents, which can vary on a per customer and per document basis. The DOC1 system supports each customer’s different formatting requirements including localisation for address formats, language and varying levels of complexity in the data to be displayed.

Tony Poulos, Chief Operating Officer of Copernicus stated – “Billing requirements are now far more sophisticated than the historic flat rate, time and/or distance basis. Any new service needs to be treated as a billable unit or event, regardless of its source or type of transaction. DOC1’s rapid development engine provides the capability to produce every type of billing documentation and deliver it in whatever format is required and via any channel, from hard copy to the Internet. Without DOC1, the process of developing ‘bill images’ would require extensive bespoke coding with an ever-increasing maintenance overhead. DOC1 minimises resource requirements in development, maintenance and operational support.



Poulos continued – “As our customers have to continually update their commercial offerings we have to be in a position to quickly adapt to the new requirements. DOC1 gives us the speed and flexibility to meet such demands. This gives both us and our customers a massive competitive advantage.”

DOC1 will be used for every bill cycle, and every bill request, for every brand that requires an output bill image – whether it is for online viewing of bills, or for paper production at an external bill rendering facility. In addition, the need for operational resources to support the bill rendering process has been minimised as the process has been fully automated.

The Copernicus use of DOC1 will extend to produce other documentation for the customer beyond the bill image. This includes statements, reports, usage summaries and graphs. Once the basic document template for a customer brand has been developed, it is much easier to add new document types, which follow the same corporate documentation image.
