London, February 5, 2001 - Solsoft, Inc., the leading provider of policy
management for e-Business security, today announced a number of
to its free security management solution Solsoft NP-Lite 4.1. New
include support for the newly released Linux NetFilter firewall and
for IP masquerading. The enhanced solution will be demonstrated at the UK
Security Show - a key event for enterprise security. Solsoft NP-Lite 4.1
a free security solution and can be downloaded from Solsoft's Web site
"Solsoft's development team is culturally a very strong Linux bastion. We
follow Linux developments very closely and have been working on the
integration of NetFilter since its beta version was made available last
June," said Sylvain Gil, Programme Manager at Solsoft.
He continued: "With NetFilter, Linux users not only benefit from all the
features and functionalities that are traditionally offered by the most
advanced firewalls of the market, they can also inspect the source code of
their core security device and therefore keep full control of their
security. This is something that commercial firewalls do not offer today.
The combination of NetFilter and NP-Lite 4.1 offers users an exceptionally
robust and user-friendly tool to manage their network security."
New features in Solsoft NP-Lite 4.1:
* Support for NetFilter devices - Solsoft NP-Lite 4.1 offers full
management capabilities for NetFilter. NetFilter is the most advanced
firewall to this date; released in January 2001 and shipped with the new
version of Linux, NetFilter offers stateful inspection, advanced NAT
and other advanced functionalities that make it comparable to any
established commercial firewalls.
* Secure upload on Linux devices using SSH - Solsoft NP-Lite 4.1
offers SSH upload capabilities, allowing administrators to build a secure
connection between their administration machine and filtering devices for
the upload of their configuration (login, password, and IP filter files).
This feature protects security policies from being observed as they are
* Support of IP Masquerading - Another major enhancement of Solsoft
NP-Lite 4.1 is the support of IP masquerading on IPchains and NetFilter.
masquerading is the Linux equivalent of Network Address Translation. Used
by organisations as both a security measure and a tool for simplifying
administration, IP masquerading allows a machine (or user) to connect to
Internet through a firewall without using an individual IP addresses.
Masquerading allows insiders to get out without allowing outsiders in, or
even to find the internal machines, since they are aware of only one IP
address, that of the firewall. This way, they cannot attack the internal
