Barry Sheerman MP launches HERO

10.30am- 12noon, Tuesday 6th March 2001

Committee Room 19, House of Commons, London, SW1

HERO (Higher Education Research Opportunities) is the new website for Higher Education in the UK. It is the first time that the Higher Education funding and research bodies have collaborated to promote UK Higher Education to domestic and international audiences.

The launch is being held on Tuesday, 6th March, in Committee Room 19, at the House of Commons, in attendance will be Barry Sheerman MP, Chair, Education Select Committee who will outline his support for HERO. We would be delighted if you are able to attend. The event will begin at 10.30am and end at 12noon.

Timothy O’Shea, Chair of HERO, Christopher Harris, Chief Executive of HERO and Roger Grinyer, Communications Director for the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) will be there to explain why HERO has been created and to answer any of your questions.

The UK HE sector has created an Internet portal, HERO, to provide the definitive source of information about Higher Education. The rationale for the site is clear. There are 100s of HE UK related websites and sites such as UCAS and the British Council, but none link to all the key sites. The HERO portal will allow HE ‘customers’ - potential students, their parents, business, researchers, and existing HE staff and students - to easily search the relevant websites.

Site demonstrations will be set up with the support of representatives from EPIC, who designed the portal. They will be able to explain the site and outline future developments. The site is already live and can be viewed at

To confirm your attendance at the launch, or for further information, please email or call on 020 7436 4060.
