First NAS File Server to Support Both Microsoft and Novell Directory Services
MILPITAS, Calif., March 5, 2001 - Maxtor* Corp. (NASDAQ:MXTR), a leading supplier of information storage solutions, today announced it is now shipping Maxtor MaxAttach* NAS 4100, a broadly interoperable, network-attached storage (NAS) file server. Windows, UNIX/Linux, Macintosh and NetWare users can easily access the server, share files and leverage existing network security features. The new high-density NAS file server is the first to support the latest enterprise directory services from Microsoft and Novell: Active Directory and NDS. Suggested pricing starts at $3,299 for the 160GB configuration. The new file server provides the interoperability and manageability benefits of most general-purpose servers for as low as one-third the cost per gigabyte.
“Our goal is to make network storage more pervasive. Maxtor knows what IT customers value most, so we have added new features and capabilities such as Gigabit Ethernet, local SCSI backup support and integration into existing network and management environments to meet their needs,” said Victor Jipson, president of Maxtor's Network Systems Group. “Companies can now widely deploy and manage our file servers with the backup and device-management tools already deployed on their business networks. IT managers will quickly realize that Maxtor MaxAttach NAS 4100 delivers the most value, manageability and performance in the mid-range NAS market.”
Maxtor's MaxAttach NAS file servers, based on new Windows 2000 technologies, are compatible with backup and device-management tools from leading vendors such as Veritas, Legato, Computer Associates and Hewlett-Packard. They support RAID 0, 1 and 5 for increased data availability and a new SCSI port enables local backup to tape. On the 320GB NAS file server, Maxtor has added high-performance Gigabit Ethernet, up to 100 times faster than traditional Ethernet. Maxtor is the first storage vendor to ship a NAS file server with this robust feature set for less than two cents per megabyte, a price point more common to tape storage.
“This is the kind of product that will be a catalyst to help accelerate the NAS market, ” said Crawford Del Prete, IDC senior vice president of hardware research. “Increasingly, it will be products like these that provide customers a useful alternative for workloads currently served primarily by general-purpose servers.”
“The Maxtor MaxAttach NAS 4100 adds an additional dimension to our storage solution portfolio,” said Gordon Wolfgang, client delivery executive for EDS. “We are always looking for new tools to scale and manage storage in a cost-effective way. Maxtor's new file server integrates easily into our Microsoft NT enterprise network infrastructure and can be readily managed with the software tools we already use for our general-purpose servers.”
Other unique Maxtor technology elements include system enhancements that double the performance of previous-generation MaxAttach file servers. Maxtor has included dual 10/100 Ethernet ports and has engineered software that enables mirroring of the operating system between two hard drives for increased fault tolerance and data availability. Maxtor MaxNeighborhood*, a Web-based graphical user interface (GUI), simplifies installation and management. MaxAttach NAS file servers install in less than 10 minutes with no network downtime.
“The MaxAttach servers will play a key role in backing up user data, personal and departmental file sharing, and to aid in the rollout of Windows 2000 and Office 2000,” said Stephan Levesque, NT systems engineer at USinternetworking, Inc. “The scalability, dependability, security, and relative low cost of the MaxAttach systems are huge benefits for a 1U box. We had our MaxAttach test system up and running in less than 20 minutes. This makes my job as a network administrator ten times easier.”
Maxtor MaxAttach NAS 4100 is currently available from leading distributors such as Bell Microproducts, Ingram Micro, Inc., and Tech Data. Suggested retail pricing for the new NAS file server is $3,299 for the 160GB configuration and $4,999 for the 320GB configuration. All MaxAttach NAS file servers include a three-year hardware warranty. Maxtor's new design allows for easy access to drives, fans and power supply for convenient field service.
