New 48 and 24 Port Modules Bring Advanced Matrix Features to Fiber Optic Networks

Newbury, UK – March 5, 2001 – Enterasys NetworksÔ has broadened its switching offerings by announcing new 48 and 24 port fiber optic modules for the Matrix E7 and Matrix E6 (formerly SmartSwitch 6000) platforms. These new modules enable Matrix customers to take advantage of the benefits of fiber optic cabling across corporate or campus networks, while also utilising the Matrix’ set of advanced features for security, traffic control and network management.

The 6H308-48 and 6H308-24 provide 100BaseFX connectivity to deliver Fast Ethernet from the network edge directly to file servers or desktop computers using fiber optic cable. The security and resiliency features of fiber optic cable plants make them ideal for network environments with concerns for intrusion, distance limitations or RF (radio frequency) interference. Examples include companies or government agencies that offer e-commerce or process confidential information, large college campuses with multiple buildings, or factories with heavy machinery that cause RF interference.

“Our new fiber modules for the Matrix are another classic example of how Enterasys protects customer investments through its modular architecture,” said Ken Kogut, Enterasys’ product marketing director for switching products. “These next-generation modules offer a tremendous boost in performance and capacity with the same set of comprehensive features that you would expect from Enterasys.”

Customers using the 6H308-48 or 6H308-24 will benefit from Enterasys’ unique Distributed Switching Architecture in both the Matrix E7 and E6. In this architecture, each module in the chassis has its own switching engine and management, providing superior performance and maximum network availability, unlike competing switches that use a centralised switching processor which can act as a single point of failure.

“The new Enterasys 6H308-24 allows us to take advantage of 802.1Q, smart trunking and increased speed while at the same time ensuring the redundancy needed for extended network uptime. We will use them in our system-wide upgrade to the Matrix E7 and also for areas with high-energy electrical equipment where fiber optic cable will be used exclusively,” said Art Ripley, network administrator at Oberlin College.

Both modules offer embedded Layer 2-4 services, including Multilayer frame classification, to bring advanced Quality-of-Service (QoS), standards-based Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), security and traffic containment to servers and desktops at the network edge. These advanced services maximise efficiency and help to turn the network into a true business tool.
